A few years ago, Paul McCartney wrote a song with the lyric “There is a fine line between chaos and creation.” I think that would be a good description of Annie Clark’s second album under the name of St. Vincent.
Actor is a collection of pop songs that sound like they were poured over meticulously, maybe too much so. All the songs are really pretty good but strung together there are so many stylistic changes and little instrumental flourishes that I believe it starts to feel a little claustrophobic and overproduced. Some albums, like Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot benefit from overproduction, but Actor never really settles into a groove and finds it’s own voice. It reminds me of The Great Escape by Blur. There is just so much going on that it almost feels exhausting to listen to. If I were to review the songs individually, they would probably rate better individually than as a complete package.
The first song, “The Strangers” shows some influence (at least in the intro) from Sufjan Stevens, who Annie Clark toured with as a guitarist. She’s really a talented guitar player and has a great voice.

The first single from the album was “Actor Out of Work”. I like it!

It reminds me of this song! (I think the band is called Your Boyfriends)
Which reminds me how much I like this video.
Here is the second single, “Marrow”. The lyrics are so-so but I totally dig the instrumentation, especially the guitar/bass.

Actor may grow on me more. I definitely don’t dislike it, but right now it’s nowhere near the top of my list for AOTY (Since I am a blogger now, AOTY (album of the year) is very important). Oh yeah, her first album is called Marry Me. Anyone who names an album after an “Arrested Development” joke is okay with me.
3/5 stars. But you might like it more than me!
Bye!

Spot on review. The album is good, but not AOTY material.
Funny you should mention Arrested Development because I am enjoying a big bowl of hot ham water right now. My coworkers say it’s offensive but I don’t care because it is so delicious.
Yeah, I agree with you this time, Zeigler. I do love the song “Actor Out of Work” even though it sounds like Your Boyfriend’s song. Whatevs.
I’m likin this. Nice review Zig
Good review! We listened to this album in the car this past weekend, and I have to agree with pretty much everything you said – it would have been better if it were simpler. I did like track 7 though (I have no idea what it’s called?).
And I don’t know what Aaron was doing eating his hot ham water at 9 a.m. He was supposed to save that for lunch.
My partner and I received a huge amount of pleasure from the blog post. You’re definitely going to appreciate this quote. – “A coward turns away, but a brave man’s choice is danger.” ~ Euripides (484 BC – 406 BC)
