I just finally got this album. I love “1904″ and “Fences” – haven’t listened to the whole album, but I’m happy so far.

I also agree with your review, Josh. I enjoy this album, but it definitely peaks too early. I think Phoenix is more of a single type of band. I know you are big on albums as a complete work for the artist, but a lot of bands are just better at having a few (or even many) good songs. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that, though I feel your disagreement is coming.

Spot on review Josh. Although, I feel like “Lasso” should of just been put in the first five songs, then I wouldn’t ever listen to the back half of the album. “1901″ is one of the better songs I’ve heard in awhile and “Lizstomania” is brilliant as well. As for their back catalog, well, I feel like it’s just like their current album: half is wonderful, half is not worth your time. They’re playing at the Slowdown September 21st if anyone is interested in their live show.
p.s. In my humble opinion, Bill Murray in Rushmore is one of the greatest character’s of all time.
