Two different people commented on The Flaming Lips. They are a band that I have never really gotten around to checking out the back catalog of, but may some day. I do have Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and At War With the Mystics, their two most recent releases which are both pretty good. Here are some bonus songs by them.
Here are two from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
“Fight Test” Remember a while ago when I mentioned “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens? This song is pretty much a direct rip off of it. The Flaming Lips had to pay half of the royalties of this song to Mr. Islam.

Here’s the real Father and Son if you want to compare.

See you next week!

I’m sure Josh has told me about the similarities between “Flight Test” & “Father and Son” before, but it still surprises me. My dad played “Father and Son” for us kids all the time on his guitar throughout our childhood. Because I’m SO familiar with the song (having played it on the guitar myself many times) I’m surprised I didn’t pick up the similarities before. Interesting.
The melody is similar in “Fight Test” & “Father and Son”, but “This song is pretty much a direct rip off of it”? Eh, kind of a stretch. Who knew Yusuf Islam would be so litigious? Cat Stevens never sued anyone. Apparently Yusuf only listens to music that other artists steal from him: http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=121&title=coldplay_vs_cat_stevens_plagiarism_or_co&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 Sue away!
Ok, so it was Cat Stevens that sued The Flaming Lips. Sue me!
Whoops, I should have been more clear. The MELODY is the same, not the rest of the song. “Fight Test” is still far superior IMO. I’m interested to see how their new album turns out.
^^^Ok, I can agree with that!^^^
I want to listen to The Soft Bulletin for sure. I’m not sure why I haven’t yet.
I have both The Soft Bulletin and Transmissions from the Satellite Heart on my computer. Should listen to them sometime.
I always thought that it sounded like “Father & Son”, that was interesting to hear them back to back.
