Jessie would not be very happy with me if I didn’t put the next song up. It is her favorite Pavement song and probably one of her all-time favorites, too.

I am a little sad there is no David Bowie left. When I think about his career, he pretty much dominated the ‘70s (along with Pink Floyd). Just look at the albums released in that decade: I’ve put a asterisk after the essentials.

1970 – The Man Who Sold the World

1971 – Hunky Dory*

1972 – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars*

1973 – Aladdin Sane*

           Pin Ups

1974 – Diamond Dogs

1975 – Young Americans

1976 – Station to Station*

1977 – Low*

           “Heroes”*

1979 – Lodger

That is a great 10 year run, one of the best decades of musical outputs by anyone, any genre, any era. So how has he been lately?

I will be the first to admit that David Bowie has pretty much stunk it up for the last 29 years.

He has had a few decent songs here and there but the classic album Bowie died after 1980’s Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).

Here are some great songs from bad albums.

Earthling “I’m Afraid of Americans (V1)” Note: The single is a different version than the one on the album Earthling, but the album cover for that is so much cooler than the single.) Also, this version is a remix done by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. I vividly remember the video.

Hours “Thursday’s Child” from the terrible hours…

Finally, this is a Bowie song called “Bring Me the Disco King” and it was originally released on his 2003 album, Reality. The album version is not very interesting and frankly, not very good. The same year it was remixed by Danny Lohner, who was in Nine Inch Nails (What’s the deal with Bowie and that band?) at the time, and appeared on the soundtrack for some movie called Underworld. Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle provides backing vocals and John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers plays guitar.

Goodbye David Bowie! I will miss you!

Lastly, I said a couple of weeks ago that I would post my favorite comment from each week. Well, I forgot to do it last week. Here it is:

“Wilco is new for me, but I’m enjoying it. Radiohead rocks!” – Amy

This week’s is easy:

“My name is Denise Ann (maiden name Grove) Phipps and I am your mother-in-law. I have not always listened to every song you list, but I did today. My favorite today is “Sound & Vision”. After being introduced to “Flight of the Conchords”, I’ll now always think of Jemaine Clement (who I have a cr
ush on) when I hear David Bowie.(Season 1, episode 6 of DVD)I’m also surprised to hear your disappointment in not having a dance at your reception. Sorry about that – you should have been more adamant! I love the fact that you sing to the boys when putting them to bed. Your father-in-law still plays “Harvest Moon” on his guitar almost nightly!” –
Momma Denise

With me and The Tyler Forret talking about non-sexual crushes, it was funny to hear about a crush my mother-in-law has.

See you next week!

Now that I’ve had a chance to fully listen to the songs of Part XI- I have to comment on how the list was awesome, but is any one else happy Bowie is done? Sorry, Josh- I like Bowie and all, but give others a chance.

I also think Pavement’s Stereo should have made the list. I love that song. I think it’s one of Pavement’s best. Best part of the song:
Well focus on the quasar in the mist
    The kaiser has a cyst
And Im a blank want list
The qualms you have and if they stick

    I love that part.
    Can’t wait for next week’s!!

I’m very happy Bowie is done. I am glad you included him on your list though! Different strokes, ya know?

I’ve been listening to Brighten the Corners and I have to say it’s pretty solid. I just haven’t caught the full blown Pavement bug. It’s probably defective genetics.

Ha! Wrong tags! Brighten the Corners — Much better!
