Wow

Yesterday I shared this picture of the boys outside.  Jett was dressed rather warmly.

A long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and socks with sandals.

This dress is standard with this boy.

Five things you should know about Jett:

#1:  Jett dresses himself every morning, and almost every morning, he comes out of his room dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and long pants, sometimes jeans, sometimes track pants or sweatpants.  Every once in a great while, he’ll throw on a pair of shorts, but the long-sleeved shirts are a staple.

If I know that we will be spending a lot of time outside or going somewhere I’d actually want to claim him, I will strongly suggest that he wear the clothes I set out for him (or he won’t get breakfast).

We have the air conditioning on almost all of the time, but currently our thermostat is set at 76 degrees – not exactly frigid – he’s not dressing this way because he’s cold in the house.  Even when outside, he’ll run around and jump and play with the warm clothes on and not complain a bit.  I’ll always remind him that he can take his shirt off or change shirts if he gets too warm.  And he’s always fine, never wants to change.  He’s very strong-willed about his choices.

Here is what he’s wearing today, August 4th, mind you:

#2:  Jett loves his Thomas the Train pajamas.  The warm, fleece ones with footies.  Jett wears these pajamas every night that we’ll let him.  I can’t wash them every day, but I do get them washed at least a couple of times a week.  And guess what?  He doesn’t mind when they’ve been worn and are “dirty”.  Not soiled, just not washed between being worn.

#3:  Jett gets out of his bed at night before he falls asleep.  This is a huge no-no resulting in the taking away of Leapster privileges, rights to the floor in our bedroom as a middle-of-the-night sleeping spot revoked, and spankings have also been known to be a consequence of breaking this rule.

#4:  Yet, fully knowing the consequences, Jett finds a way to sneak into our living room nearly every night with something very urgent and very important to say.  And when we hear his little feet approaching on the hard wood surface of the kitchen floor before he reaches the living room, Josh and I pause what we’re watching and look knowingly at each other.

#5: When he addresses us after getting out of bed, he ALWAYS begins with this phrase: “What I wanted to say was…” and then fill in the excuse.  Common issues are the closet door being open (scary), an I Spy book being in their room (for as much as he loves I Spy books, he doesn’t like to be sleeping in the same room as one), his pillow being too hot, etc.. I wish right now that I would have been writing all of these down.  A lot of times, he’ll say, “What I wanted to say was…” and then look around the room for something to talk about.  Or sometimes it’s “What I wanted to say was I love you.”  Nice, but still against the rules he still gets disciplined.

So when Jett showed up at the threshold of the living room two nights ago looking like this:

We didn’t even try to hide our laughter.

Jett said, “What I wanted to say is can I sleep in your room?”

After we stopped laughing, I took a picture, and we told him that he could sleep on the floor in our room BUT if he got up again he’d have to go back to his room.

If you’ll notice the long-sleeved shirt from the top picture of this post is layered underneath the fleece pajamas (it was the same night).  And you had better believe his jeans were under there, as well as his socks.  And then he finished up the look by adding his sandals to the outside of his pajamas.

Josh, who tucked them in earlier, said he wasn’t dressed that way when he put the boys to bed.

Last night when they were getting ready for bed, I heard Jett tell Josh that he still needed shoes after he got his pajamas on (same pj’s, of course, layered on top of a short-sleeved shirt, track pants and socks).  Josh told him we don’t wear shoes to bed and Jett let the idea go… for the night, at least.

The heart wants what the heart wants.
