Carrots

For the last several days, Jace had not been sleeping as well as in the past.  He’d fall asleep while nursing, but wouldn’t stay asleep for long.  When I put him down in his crib he’d begin to cry and overall was taking fewer naps.  He’d want to nurse more frequently like he wasn’t getting enough.  My milk is still plentiful, but it occurred to me that he might be ready for food.  Not just rice cereal, real food.

I happened to have carrots in my fridge, so I boiled ‘em up and threw ‘em in the food processor and fed them to Jace pureed with just a little bit of water.

And he loved them!  You could call him the King of Carrot Flowers, even.

You know when babies try a food for the first time?  They often scrunch-up their faces as they are learning a new taste and texture?  Didn’t happen with this kid.  He acted as though he’s been eating carrots his whole life.  No reactions whatsoever.  Except for lunging toward the next bite.  I dished up what I thought was a hearty first portion and then had to get more.  Twice.

And when it was all said and done:

What is that?  Contentedness?  He took a nearly 3 hour nap afterward, was awake for an hour and then slept from 10 pm – 8:30 am.

That full belly was just what he needed to get back to his old sleeping patterns.
