Jude is old enough this year to attend Awana which started about a month ago. Awana is a program through our church where kids learn Bible stories, memorize scripture verses, play games and do crafts every Wednesday night. Since Jett is too young to go, Josh has been trying to do something special with him on the nights that Jude is at Awana. Last week Josh and Jett got groceries together. Trust me, this is a special treat for Jett – he loooves the greshry store.
When they got back home from getting groceries, Josh said that he was letting Jett get basically whatever he wanted at the store. There were lots of treats – treats that I would never normally buy, which I guess made it even more special for Jett. One curious item I saw Josh carry into the house was a watermelon. Hmmm… that’s strange, I thought. I don’t think in my entire life I’ve bought watermelon. But Josh said that Jett really, really wanted it, so he bought it. I just kind of rolled my eyes, not sure how and in what kind of time frame we were going to eat $8 worth of watermelon. We finished putting the groceries away, went to bed and didn’t think too much more of the watermelon.
The next morning was rainy and dark. The kids had slept in a little later than usual and Josh before he left for work, brought Jace into bed with me so I could nurse him before I got up for the day. Next thing I know, Jude comes in and says, “Jett’s eating watermelon. He should tell the truth.”
I looked beyond Jude at the doorway to my room where Jett was noshing on a handful of watermelon.
Oh nooooooooooooooo!
I wasn’t really sure what I was going to find but I bravely made my way into the living room.
Pretty bad, right? The trouble was, all I saw was the “seedless” sticker that had been on the watermelon, but I didn’t see any watermelon – just the juice. I knew it had to be behind the couch, and so I went to take a peek and discovered I was right:
Those darn kids. They broke open the entire thing and had a free for all until Jude’s conscience got the best of him and he came to tell me what had happened.
To clean up, I first picked up all the watermelon chunks I could find and then used a bath towel to sop up the rest of the juices. That whole bath towel was wet by the time I was done. Luckily, once the juice came up, there was only a light pink tint to the carpet, and that came out pretty easily, too.
What will be next?
Oh, that reminds me of another little stunt they pulled over the weekend. I took a shower Saturday afternoon to get ready to go to the wedding of a college friend of mine. I wasn’t in the shower very long and my hot water ran out. I was surprised because no one else had showered recently and I hadn’t been running the dishwasher or washing machine immediately before my shower, either. I waited a half hour or so and gave Jace a bath, but – poor guy – that water was fairly cool, too.
Finally I went to inspect the hot water heater: the boys had turned it to the vacation setting, the little rascals! No wonder!
Needless to say – I’m hoping this is an uneventful week!

I’m glad they got into it by breaking it instead of getting the knives out!
Wow! I’m really impressed that they managed to break it open by themselves! How’d they do it?
I think they just broke it open by dropping it against the tile. I don’t know, I couldn’t tell if it was broken in the middle of the living room floor, where I first saw all the juice on the floor, or if it was broken behind the couch on the tile. I should have set up a crime scene, examined the evidence, looked for puncture wounds and the like, but we were already running late for preschool so I just quickly cleaned it up – I can’t even remember disciplining them for it. :(
I love your boys, and I love your patience. Judah begged me to buy him a watermelon today at the store, and I thankfully declined. Now I am glad I did…we’ve got to keep our boys far far away from one another.
It looked like a really good melon.
Jessie, I raise quite a few watermelon…should have sent some along with Doug and Jan!!! If they are ripe just a drop on the floor will split them open. By the way, watermelon is very good for you. They are full of Vit C! Next time (?) split one open, dig out the flesh and put it in a plastic container. It will stay good for several days and it is a great food for breakfast, noon or supper or for a treat in-between. Grandma Ada used to get one, she would slice it and we would sit outside and spit the seeds out on the ground. Great memories!!
Unrelated, but I’ve been sweeping a lot of mines lately, and my friend showed me this. Hilarious for all you minesweepers out there:
