I am totally an Iowa Hawkeye Football fair weather fan and I don’t mind admitting it. We don’t watch many sporting events at our house. I’m all about rooting for any and all Iowa teams (Iowa, ISU, UNI) in any sport and have never had any strong allegiances to any particular school. That said, Josh and I have been having a lot of fun watching Hawkeye Football the last several weekends.
Hey, it’s fun to watch a good team win! It’s not much fun to follow a losing team and suffer through the losses in bad years. Now that Iowa is 8-0 this season, it’s exciting to see if they’ll keep the streak alive and to witness history for the school.
For the last three weekends, Josh and I have recorded the Iowa games, waited until the kids were in bed, and then watched them without commercial interruption. The last two weekends in a row we’ve ordered buffalo wings to eat at home with the game on. It’s been so much fun. There have been some very exciting games, too!
Watching a game on the DVR after it has ended is very dangerous in this day and age. I’ve learned to avoid media, especially Facebook after a game is underway so as not to see/hear any spoilers.
So are there any Hawkeye Football fans out there? Fair weather or otherwise? =)

I’m a true black and gold girl. No fair weather in this house. Win or lose, they’re our guys! We are not so good with the rooting for any Iowa team. If they aren’t called the Hawks, then we don’t like ‘em. It’s just who we are. But, yes, the games have been majorly intense lately…and it is fun to have witnessed history in the making. We’ll be talking about this year of football forever!
As a true blue Michigan fan I’m kind of looking forward to one of those infamous Stanzi balls to find itself ruining a Hawk game this year. Has any other guy avoided disaster more than Richard? At least three of those passes on the last drive should of ended the game. That being said, Go Hawks!
Sorry about my husband and his FB game spoiler. :) He can’t help himself he’s a die hard and in fact I thought he was totally going to DIE hard in the last minute of Saturday’s game. Our house is a Hawkeye household thru and thru with a zero tolerance policy for cardinal and gold. Blade’s kindergarten teacher was a Cyclone fan and when we went for the Meet the Teacher night Blade asked her if she really had to have all that gross Cyclown stuff up on her wall. LOL. Hawks Rock!
PP, it’s ok – it was sooo my fault. I should not have been on the dang computer! I didn’t tell Josh the result, so it was still a fun game to watch. Then last weekend, we had successfully avoided media and were watching the game when the DVR unexpectedly stopped and went to live TV where there just happened to be post-game coverage and I saw the 15-13 score, but didn’t know who the winner was. Still very exciting!
Oh, yea, go Hawks. Allie goes there and I grew up going to Hawkeye games. My Dad at one time had season tickets to football, basketball and wrestling. I’m from close to Iowa City, so there was no choice but to be a Hawkeye. Allie loves going to Iowa and Iowa City really is a cool town!!
I’m a Cyclone fan since I spend so much tuition money at ISU. How about the feel good story at ISU this year? We had all this hype for bringing in a brand new coach two years ago (remember the gold coins?) who fed us a bunch of lip service that he was here to stay, and bailed last Christmas for his alma mater. His guidance and direction afforded us two wins his first season (one being a very memorable win against Iowa) and three wins his second season (including going 0 for the Big 12). And what about the kids he recruited to ISU to play for him? Probably shouldn’t request any character references from them. So now our athletic director’s job is on the line to find a coach that is going to 1.) stay 2.) win and 3.) win on the road. Enter Paul Rhoads. Local guy and passionate (the guy was bawling at his introductory press conference). The trick to being a fan in a transitioning program is to expect nothing and hope for less. Paul has got his team sitting at 5-3 right now (second place in the Big 12 North)… pulling even with Chizek’s career win tally. It should also be noted that we lost two very close games that could have gone either way (both on the road). We just beat Nebraska for the first time at Lincoln in 32 years without our starting QB & RB. Paul has got the kids playing hard and is one win away from becoming bowl eligible. Bowl eligible people. It has been a really fun season for college football in our state this year. Among ISU, Iowa, and UNI- there are four losses. Not too bad.
Check that- 6 losses since UNI lost the last 2 weeks in a row
Jacob, great synoposis of the Cyclones. My husband and I have been season ticket holders for 32 years! Yep! Can’t call us fair weather and we’ve sat through alot of bad weather and bad football. We have a sincere coach in Paul Rhoads. If you haven’t checked out the Cyclones website (www.cyclones.com), check out the locker room celebration and the celebration for the team when they returned to Ames. Paul Rhoads is a true motivator. GO CYCLONES! Oh – what happened with the Shuckeyes this weekend?
oops!@ just noticed a typo as I was sending my comment. A pet peeve of mine and others…. ha! for the record, I know it is synopsis.
Big Iowa fan here. Great wins for the both the Hawks and Clones this week!
Does being a fair weather fan consist of a husband nearly punching a hole in a wall with excitement and waking our 3 year old up from the excited tone that echoed throughout our whole house on Saturday night????? Ummmm…..I have to say, we are definitely Hawkeye fans during the good seasons and during the bad seasons….glad you have found enjoyment watching them play, we certainly do!!!!
Since you know Dylan you probably know what I’m going to say. My husband’s happiness solely depends on how the Hawks have done. Our son was born at the U of I hospital overlooking Kinnick Stadium on a game day and he went home in a Hawkeye outfit. Our dog’s name is Herky and we just bought two U of I snuggies for ourselves. There is a sign on my front door that says “A Hawkeye Fan Lives Here”. We have even converted all of our friends here in WA who don’t give a care about the Big Ten to cheer for Iowa. I don’t care for football at all but I love being a fan of something and I love supporting my husband’s Hawkeye habit :)
