I received such a nice gift yesterday that I wanted to share pictures with you. I’m a sucker for homemade gifts. Go figure – a gal like me who likes to make ‘em also likes receiving ‘em! A girlfriend of mine, Amber, made this for me – er, Jace… um, us! It’s a hexagonal crocheted baby throw! It’s got cute little yarn balls for texture, too. It’s so neat! My first thought was kicking myself for not going with the hexagonal baby crib – I wondered if I could still get the enjoyment out of such a beaut in our rectangular world. Turns out I’m an idiot and can use this in the same fashion I use any other blanket or quilt! Yeah, I’m that dense sometimes. I’m going to snuggle Jace in it and throw it over his car seat and let him roll around on it on the floor.
So, yeah, it was touching to me to receive this unique and handmade gift. It led me to wishin’ that I knew how to crochet. I like the fact that you don’t need lots of expensive tools to get started and projects would be fairly portable on the go. I’m a girl who likes to be doing something when I sit down to watch TV. It could be a Sudoku or crossword puzzle, it could be surfing the web, it could be binding a quilt, I just love to be doing something IN ADDITION TO watching TV. Crocheting would be that perfect something, wouldn’t it?
Josh’s cousin Rachel also made us a homemade gift for Jace, a beautiful baby book. I want to post pictures of that once I write in it. I haven’t written in it yet, but I will. It’s such a gorgeous book and I love it that much more because Rachel made it for us.
So if you could Martha up a special creation, what would it be? What hobby would you most like to learn? Most of you know that I love to quilt. Many people say they would like to learn a particular skill or hobby but few actually set out to accomplish it. If time and money were no objects, would you build a bookcase? Make cards? Scrapbook? Weld? Bake? Make jewelry?
I feel a resurgence of the homemade gifts, do you notice the trend? It’s lovely.

Adorable blanket. That is such a thoughtful gift.
I would scrapbook and learn how to play the guitar. Scrapbooking is definitely a hobby you can invest a ton of time and money in… But the finished result is so cool. I have an awesome scrapbook of my wedding pictures that my best friend created for me. I will definitely treasure it forever. I had several hundred pictures from my trip to Europe this spring. I ended up selecting my favorites and creating a hardcover scrapbook on snapfish.com. The whole thing cost me about $40 and I always get compliments on it; so for now, that’s my version of scrapbooking.
As far as the guitar playing goes, I have always wanted to play and even own a secondhand electric guitar. Sometime I will take lessons. I’d love to be able to play some classic rock songs.
I’m really looking forward to sewing on my new/old machine! :)
I’d be a bricklayer
I would learn a random instrament like the dulcimer or accordian and bust it out at random times. Like maybe I would show up for worship practice with a digery doo(sp?) and act confused when I didn’t make the team.
Kung Fu and not so I could do MMA. Just so I could beat a**…and the discipline and calming effect it has on people. Also beating a**.
@Travis: I totally understand. I would be a ninja. The kind that dresses all in black with a 1/2 face mask and I would throw those star things. And learn ninja terminology to know what the star things are really called.
i’m currenly weaving a pair of trousers
@Sara P: The throwing stars are called shuriken if you were wondering. Actually hiro-shuriken to be exact. Good ninjitsuing to you.
