My civic duty

I’m so excited by a letter I received in the mail last week!  My time has finally come: I received a jury duty summons.

I have been waiting and waiting for this opportunity for such a long time.  I’ve always wanted to serve as a juror and now I’m one step closer.

Here’s a fun fact about me: I’m a TV news magazine junkie.  Dateline, 48 Hours Mystery, 20/20… they’re all on my DVR.  I love a good murder mystery, true crime books, a courtroom thriller.  To be inserted into the drama without being a victim or perp?  Now that would be exciting!

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but I wonder what Keith Morrison talks like in person, you know – in regular conversation?  Would it be like this?:

(see SNL sketch)

All I know is I can’t wait to find out, you know, when Keith requests an interview after being jury foreperson for the trial of the century.  Yeah, it could happen.

Also, did you know that should I be selected for service, I would receive $30/day up to seven days, $50/day for eight or more days?  That’s the best income proposal I’ve received in years!

Ooooh, can you imagine if I were sequestered in said trial of the century?  I’m imagining being put up in a hotel, free of kids, meals paid… sounds like a vacation to me.  One could only dream.

Do any of you have any experience serving as a juror?  It was glamorous, right?

I am also a crime mystery junkie! I didn’t know we had that in common.
I was called up for jury duty once.
Had to go down to the ghetto of Detroit at like 6am… sat in a crowded room with nothing to do all day and then they sent me home at 5pm. That was it. (The people watching was fantastic though!)
I remember I was very excited about the prospect of being part of some courtroom action… it just didn’t turn out that way for me… I’m sure you’ll be luckier and that your day will be filled with all kinds of exciting drama though.
But bring something to read just in case, that’s my advise. :)

I’ve been voting for 35+ years (that’s how they get the pool from which to draw) & have been called for jury duty just twice. Once I needed to report for one day & the second time, not at all. It was interesting to watch the positioning of the attorneys & try to figure out who would actually be selected to serve based on the case at hand. I, too, am a crime/mystery junkie. My hubby says I would make a great PI. It will be an interesting experience for you. Just bear in mind, if you have to pay for childcare…you won’t net much income!

I love getting those letters in the mail too! I’ve gotten close, but have never made it to that jury yet…

I always wondered why jury duty has such a negative connotation? Seems like the best time to me!

ive never served on a jury. My friend craig got a good one though. He got to convict a tama guy who kicked his girlfriend hard enough to destroy her spleen.

I missed two days of high school for jury duty. It was awesome. I got paid and I got to miss school! My case was a woman who was found with drugs in her coat. Her defense: “Someone musta put it there.” Lame.

Oh my gosh! I’m so excited for you! My job had ended December 31, 2007. I didn’t want to work thru the winter and had received a nice severance package. Imagine my excitement when I discovered one of the most exciting trials on CourtTV (yeah…I know it is something else now). It was the trial of Mark Jensen who was on trial for killing his wife Julie 10 years earlier. Here I was in NE Missouri and I was addicted! I mean, I ate and breathed this trial! When it went off air on CourtTV, I’d watch it on my laptop! Maybe you’ve caught it on one of those NewsMags…it was on not to long ago. This trial isn’t over as it will go to the Supreme Court eventually because of the decision of the lower court to accept Julie’s letter written before she died as testimony.

Good luck and I can’t wait to hear more about this!
