Sometimes when I call him Jettster Poindexter, he replies: “Just call me Jett.”
Well, ok then.
Several of you have thoughtfully and lovingly asked about my little Jett. Thank you for that; I realize I’ve been negligent about updating since the tonsillectomy. And just where are we with potty training, you ask? (Don’t ask.) Well, I’ll tell you.
The last time I talked about his tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy was a little over a month ago, on his third day after surgery. Here’s a link to that post. Every day for a week after surgery, he’d have times – just a few – that he’d experience pain and get a little cranky. Most of the time, with Tylenol, everything was right with his world. We didn’t deny him any of the soft foods he asked for, going through a lot of popsicles, ice cream, pudding, yogurt. Of course, I came through for the guy a few times with trips to Tropical Sno. It was the least I could do.
His worst day was exactly a week after surgery. He had a hard time swallowing and would wince when eating. He was just cranky and not feeling well in general. His slobbering was the worst on that particular day; his speech was also very muffled.
And then the very next day, it was as though nothing had ever happened to the kid. He was great! He was able to eat anything he wanted, his scabs were off, the awful smell from the back of his throat (gross!) was gone, he didn’t experience any of the pain he had over the previous week.
Very shortly after the week mark, when he was used to his new mouth, he stopped drooling completely. His shirts are now dry all the time! It’s been a major difference. Even more importantly to his health, his snoring also abruptly stopped. He’s been sleeping wonderfully since. He’s actually starting to get up early with his brother, which has been rough on me – I used to look forward to his second sleeping session with me in the mornings. It’s just as well, I didn’t need to get too spoiled before the new baby gets here.
And that was the good news.
The bad news? We haven’t picked the potty training back up since his surgery. He’s been in diapers all of the time over the last month. I am extremely glad we gave it up during his surgery and recovery, but I haven’t wanted to deal with it since. I’ve often heard that the worst time to potty train is during a move or with a new baby. I think that’s why I’ve been so resistant to picking it up again, because I know things are going to be crazy here again in a matter of days. I don’t think it will benefit him to start again and then not be consistent around the time the baby is born. I plan to start again toward the end of the month and hit it hard and completely for at least the two weeks before preschool starts. I’m very hopeful that since he’s familiar with the physical routine of going potty on the pot, he’ll be more receptive to doing it.
So wish us luck with that whole thing. I know it’ll happen eventually. I just don’t want to spend another 7+ straight weeks of being the only willing participant.

Thanks for the update, Jessie. I agree with you on the potty training. I can almost guaranteee you that once you start again, he’ll be completely trained in a very short time, expecially if there’s a reward like being able to go to preschool! I think he knows what he has to do, he just doesn’t want to do it yet! Anxious to hear you news – hope all goes well!
