What in the heck just happened?
Do kids even make prank phone calls anymore? Adults? Disturbed young people?
First of all, I was a little out of sorts anyway from going to bed around 8:30 pm last night. Sleeping has been hit and miss for me lately. I felt tired all day yesterday and so I just decided to go for it and see if I could fall asleep at that time of the night. Turns out I could. Josh came to bed around 10:30 pm and I knew I’d been sleeping for awhile. I fell back to sleep fairly easily.
At 2:51 am, the phone rang. Once… maybe it’s a mistake and they’ll hang up. Twice… well, I’d better answer. I reach over Josh to pick up the phone. “Hello?”
“Hi, could I speak to Josh?” a young woman’s voice asked.
“Um, it’s the middle of the night. What is this about? Who is this?” I ask, startled and confused. Oddly enough, my first thought was that it was an ISU student asking for a donation. Seriously. I love when they call and say, “Could I go ahead and put you down for $1,000?” Riiiiight.
But this caller was different. Obviously.
“Danielle. He made a promise to love me forever and I need to know if he’s going to keep his promise.”
…stunned silence…
Josh has started to wake up and I hand the phone to him.
“Who is this?” Josh asked.
“I think you have the wrong number.”
“What’s your last name?”
“I don’t even know you.”
She tells him to look her up on MySpace and that she’s hot before Josh hangs up.
At first I tell Josh that at least none of our family members have died.
And then I start getting mad. Who thinks they can just make phone calls to people in the middle of the night? Don’t they know people have to work in the morning? Don’t they realize that households have sleeping kids? Pregnant women who don’t need any extra excitement or any real reason not to sleep at night?
At least I did settle down enough go back to sleep around 4 am. When Josh got up for work at 5:45 am, I’m pretty sure I had no idea what was going on.
And when the kids and I got up for the day at 7 am, I was still wondering if I had imagined the events of last night. It’s a reasonable question considering…
…right before I woke up, I was dreaming that I was an off-campus graduate student who had an apartment. My roommate, selected by the college, happened to be a gentleman. I was going to be meeting him for the first time and when I walked in our apartment with my friends, we discovered large framed pictures on the wall of him as a character in a TV show. In the show, he was married to the woman who portrayed Andrea (the old one) from Beverly Hills 90210 and he was in scrubs – they were holding a baby. I was so excited to tell Josh because I was sure he would be the only one to know the actor’s name.

I hope tonight is less exciting. I could use a full night’s rest.

Ha! She WAS the old one! What was she like 10 yrs older than the rest of the cast? I mean, come on.
weirdness! no caller id?
Nope, no caller id on the home phone, we tried *69, but got an “unavailable” – the number could have been blocked. I just hope it doesn’t happen again. It’s the last thing I need right now.
