Monday we saw our first 70 degree day of the year in these parts. It was a beautiful day. I only hope it lasts… not 70’s every day – I’m not that greedy – but wouldn’t it be nice if the temps stayed above freezing from here on out?
Josh lucked out by having the day off work. I had a dentist appointment in the early afternoon (no cavities!) and then we took the kids to the high school in town to let the boys practice riding their… NEW BIKES!
I’ve wanted the boys to have bicycles for a long time. They just never “got” the plastic toddler tricycles, and I never knew if it was the difficult proportions that made pedaling impossible or just a general disinterest.
More than a week ago, Josh’s parents took the kids shopping for their birthdays and came back with these bikes:
Pretty sweet, huh?
They’re matching, of course. Different seat adjustments for now, but the same bike.
Our school district has a week-long spring break now, so I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity for the boys to get used to riding their bikes in the empty parking lot, not having to worry about traffic, hills, even turning their handlebars much.
It made perfect sense on paper.
But, sadly (more for me probably, and not them) they didn’t show much interest. Shortly after we unloaded the bikes and put the kids on the seats, they were hopping off chasing each other on foot around the parking lot.
See the little red barn in the background? The kids couldn’t stay away from that. It was a powerful force, apparently.
We lasted all of 10 minutes with the biking adventure. Jude knows how to pedal (still needs to work on steering), and Jett was starting to get pedaling, but every full rotation with both feet and he’d get confused and go backward, applying the brake.
Heck, I don’t want to push them too hard. They’ll pick it up when they’re ready. I just want them to be into it now. I could imagine lots of time and energy being expended by them riding up and down the sidewalks around our house, to the park (not alone, of course), racing each other – having all kinds of fun.
They’ll have an interest eventually.
What else do you do?
We packed it up and took the party to Dairy Queen!
Yes, my eyes are closed, but it’s just so cute of Jett, I’m sacrificing my cool-factor, as if I had one in the first place.

Cute pics! Those bikes are way cool too
One day they’ll be getting on the bike path & riding their bikes all the way to see dad at work!
Mason didn’t really start to like riding his bike til this spring.. at 4 1/2… so there is hope for ya jessie… he would much rather of driven his little plastic big wheel around last summer.. i think it was cause the pedals on that were easier to reach than the bike.. but now he wants to ride it all the time.. you got some great pics and yeah those are some really cool bikes!!!
