It’s fair to say that after our trip to the Black Hills last summer, my boys are obsessed with Mt. Rushmore – or as they affectionately refer to it: “the faces”.
Mom & Dad for Christmas gave the boys a children’s book about the history of Mt. Rushmore. The book had been tucked away, forgotten for some time until recently. It’s now their favorite book for the time being.
Well, last week we’d only read the book a few times. In the car on the way home from Des Moines, Jude was going on and on about the book. He started telling me why each president is on Mt. Rushmore.
“George Washington because he was the first president. Thomas Jefferson because he was the second president [which is not right, but I didn’t correct him at the time because I had to google it first – sad, I know. FYI, it was John Adams and then Thomas Jefferson]. Abraham Lincoln because he had a magician’s coat and Theodore Roosevelt because he rode a horse.”
I started laughing and then I had him repeat it for me – just to make sure I heard correctly. Magician’s coat? Seriously? I wasn’t even sure he knew what a magician was or that they had distinctive coats.
Sure enough, I took another look at the book when we got home. No, it didn’t say that Lincoln had a magician’s coat, but the illustrated picture showed him in a long, black coat. His signature stovepipe hat? That was sitting next to Lincoln on a table, brim up. It really does look like he could have just reached right in there and pulled out a rabbit!

I will never look at Abraham Lincoln the same. That’s awesome!!!
I LOVE your Abe Lincoln story! What an imagination!!!
So cute – and I love the update on Jude!!! I’m so thankful for what they said and that he’s in that preschool with such an AWESOME teacher.
