Recession hitting close to home

My sister found out yesterday that the magazine she was working on as a free lance graphic designer was done.  The company that pays Meredith to produce it just could not afford to publish another issue.  That means that Emily is now without a job – with no warning at all.  In fact, they were recently told that the company had four months left in their contract with Meredith, so they would be finding out soon whether the contract would be renewed or not.  Emily thought she had a little bit of time, because she thought there would be a possibility they wouldn’t renew.  But the news came much more suddenly than anyone anticipated.

Now let’s look at the positives.  One, Emily is very good at what she does.  Two, she has made great contacts at Meredith and with other area designers, so hopefully one of those contacts will pay off with work or leads on jobs.  There’s already one job she’s being considered for, with others on the horizon.  Now she’s filling out applications… and waiting.  And the hard part (besides temporary lack of income) – she has no control over hiring processes or timelines.

Please pray for her to have patience and faith in God’s timing.

It hurts to see your sister hurt, you know?

I’m sorry for your sister! That has to hurt! Things here in Michigan are very bad – Michigan has the worst unemployment rate in the nation right now = 10.5%. In the last week, I’ve had three friends whose sons suddenly lost their jobs – same thing – they showed up for work and were told not to bother coming back in the next day because they were shutting down the business. Tough days! But through it all I’m convinced that God is in control and will take care of us!!

  • Im praying for your sis Jesse, I know its so tough right now. I hope she knows when the Lord closes one door, he opens another. Barb

Sorry to hear this about Emily! As you know, I’ve told you about my
sister-in-law who has struggled as a freelance artist – 40 years of experience. Unfortunately, when companies struggle, advertising is the first to go. Because Joyce had to have some benefits and steady income, she is now a collector at Wells Fargo. She hated to give up the work she loves, but she’s single income. Emily is much younger and so talented. She will do fine in the field. I KNOW there is age discrimination in the job search despite what companies profess. That’s why I (the laid off Citi worker) will not be finding anything soon. My other sister-in-law works at Farm Bureau and they laid off 76 workers on Wednesday. She was safe. Told them and immediately walked them out the door and they had to return after hours to pick up their belongings. That approach stinks!!! I pray for God’s help!
