Have you all seen the ‘I Pledge…’ video? It’s been floating around on the MSN homepage for the last couple of days. I thought I’d post it here for all of you to enjoy. :) Celebrities are so patriotic, smart, practical and oozing with virtue. And they want us to follow their lead. So, what do you say? Let’s try to be better people for them and for this country!
Comments anyone? Don’t be shy.

I pledge to vomit every time a I hear a celeb make a pledge!
I’m not-so-much thinking I’ll be pledging to “be a servant to my President.” But I DO pledge to laugh more.
I pledge not to worry too much about the exorbiant amount of money that was spent on celebrity endorsements for that ad which only served to make us vomit.
Oh and I also pledge to continue to use blogging to make myself and others laugh. See how I did that shameless plug? Yep I’m not above it!
are you kidding me??!! i pledge, or rather commit myself to worship and live for the one who made me, Jesus Christ – not idols!
I would love to ask these people in a year just how many trees they had planted, how many plastic bottles they have not used, how many plastic grocery sacks they have declined, on and on. They are so vacuous.

Good point, Vinnie! I completely agree with you, we are called to serve! And because I was overcome with cynicism regarding the celebrity angle of this message, I failed to point that out. To me, the call to serve seems so empty without God. I’m reminded of Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.”
It’s not clear to me to whom they are asking us to plege and to serve. President Obama? All mankind? Or the one true God?
Where were these celebs a year ago? Did it not matter if we all looked out for one another then? Is serving others conditional upon who our leaders are… or should we serve, conserve, be nice, not give anyone the finger while driving, etc. anyway? I love your example, Vinnie, that’s exactly what I mean. You didn’t need a celebrity to tell you to do that and neither do I. I guess that’s why I take offense to the video – because a person can sell a lot of movie tickets or albums does not mean I want to take his/her cues when it comes to “do-gooding”.
But – seriously – thank you for making a meaningful point out of this!
It’s all good celebs are pledging and all and expect common folks to follow. The reality is that a month from now most of the folks including the celebs will have forgotten about this pledge.
In all seriousness though, let us not forget or undermine the principals of this call. God made us to be in fellowship with one another and commanded us to serve one another. Humans underestimate the power in serving one another. Lives are changed and people are enabled. A couple years ago, my wife and I participated in church group built around the principal behind Rick Warrens – we are better together book. Through these small groups, we were able to package 1.8 million meals for the need in Haiti. All this in 40 days. If the whole world came out to serve, there would be no hunger and no poverty. And while we are serving, we would build brotherly bonds that last forever. So don’t just pledge, get out and SERVE!
I guess being of service is the fad now. You know how celebs are and trying to be ahead of the curve on fads – right?
I just hope, really hope that they and others get the importance / meaning of being of service to one another. I believe that is what Obama is calling every one to do. I agree that we serve God, but I also believe that in sincerely serving one another, we serve God as well. Matthew 25:40 says “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it unto me”. Who knows – you may be serving angels with you knowing. There are a lot of people out there hurting and need people like us who are able to help.
Someone once taught me that, the only way a marriage can last is when the husband serves the wife and the wife serves the husband. When you do that, it eliminates all selfishness and “me first” attitudes that plague a lot of relationships. By serving one another, you are essentially focusing on the needs of the other person hence you fan the embers of love to keep it burning bright. Try it, you will see wonders in your life.
