Misanthrope

misanthrope: a person who hates or distrusts humankind

I know it’s negative, harsh, strong but this word just kept running through my mind Tuesday night.

Josh, my sister Emily and I went to see Okkervil River in Chicago at Metro bar.   We were Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box.  If I moved… at all… I touched everyone around me.  I was seriously doubting the joint was in accordance with the fire code.

And then there was Drunk Guy, on the prowl for a good fight.  Why do those guys show up?  Why do they like the same music I do?  Doesn’t make sense!  When we first got to the venue, we could tell this dude had had too much to drink.  And then two opening bands and several drinks later, this guy was brushing into people (because he couldn’t even stand up straight) and would stare them down and run his mouth, just looking for a fight.  It was so crowded that Emily was separated from us, but we could still see her.  Drunk Guy drifted over closer to Emily and I actually pulled her back to stand with us, out of harm’s way.  It was so distracting to see him get in everyone’s face (even women) that I couldn’t pay attention to the band.  Finally, his friend pulled him out of there and I relaxed again.

Josh had a good assessment of the night in comparison to the show we saw in Omaha.  The venue, much worse; the crowd, much worse; the band, slightly better.  The Chicago show was the last night of their US part of the tour, so we felt they left it all out on the stage.  No voice-saving measures were taken.

The show was over at 1 am, but we didn’t get back to our hotel until 3 am – which included being stuck on the El for a stretch of 20 minutes or so around 2:30 am when a rail crew repaired something on the track.

Overall, it was much more driving and there were a few things we would have done differently, different routes we would have taken, but it was a great adventure and we all had fun.

Anyone need a $10 CTA card?  We overbought transit credits because of a misleading vending machine and were told by an attendant that they were non-refundable.  Shucks.  You win some, you lose some.

  • Hi Jess, I’m glad at least the band was good, but I know what you mean by annoying people, do they not know what they act like and how dumb they look, obviously they don’t know or don’t care or the alcohol just makes them think they are invincible. Glad your’e back home safe and sound. Call me when your’e ready for Wellspring, I’m always ready, maybe next week. Talk to you later, Barb
