Shout out to Aunt Lo who sent me a link to www.flylady.net after reading my desperate posts last week about regaining control over my house. I was sure I’d seen this FlyLady business somewhere before. Mentioned on a blog I’d read in the past? Not sure. The point is, I’d never visited the site before and now I’m glad I have.
After I read about the gist of the site, I signed myself up immediately for the email list. The goal is all about creating a new routine, gradually making cleaning and clutter control part of a daily life, so it doesn’t reach epic proportions. And, of course, when one’s home is under control, it’s a more calming and more productive atmosphere. Moods improve and a gal (me) isn’t embarrassed when there is an unexpected knock at the door!
Yesterday was my Day 1. The only task was to clean the kitchen sink to a shine. And so I did. It looks nice despite the fact it’s a black ceramic basin and the water spots never completely go away. I even used a clear shoe polish to lessen the appearance of those pesky water marks. But I know it’s super-duper Clorox, Comet and Windex clean so that’s all that matters. Now the upkeep… that’s another story.
So, anyone want to join me in this new adventure? Go visit the site and if you think it’s your cup of tea, sign up and let me know you’re out there. I need encouragement. I know being neat and organized comes so easy to a lot of you, but it IS NOT second nature to me. Not even third or fourth nature for that matter! I need to work on it – BIG TIME!

I went to the Flylady site, it’s great. I don’t know, Jessie, I think there is something in the air, maybe it is a glut of political stuff, but I want to empty my house of clutter. Can’t control the elections, bu I can control the accumulation of “stuff”!
The first thing I want to do is chop up the old piano downstairs and haul it away. Rob was horrified, asked why I didn’t just tune it? Well, that might make me feel friendlier towards it. But, it wouldn’t free up any floor space.
In my mental caculations, for some reason I began to think of my lovely laundry, the best room in the house. But….it was built around the washer and dryer, what if I needed to replace them? Could I even get them out of the room, is the door wide enough? I had feelings of claustrophobia sweep over me, as if I were the washer and dryer, forever entrapped in that room. Never fear, I checked and they can be removed if necessary.
After reading the Flylady’s suggestions, all I have to do is start at the sink, which is already clean and sometimes even wiped dry.
It’s a great start.
I miss putting dishes in the sink.
jessie, I take complete responsibility for your genetic predisposition to slobbery. It was certainly i, and not your mother who unfairly weighted the gene pool towards my own bent. face it, the path to your fixed purpose is laid on iron rails to which your soul is grooved to run. Melvill realized it. no escaping your destiny. embrace your inner slob!
I’ve embraced it! Thanks Dad
I embrace it, and celebrate it with gusto.
