New furniture

Here’s my favorite new piece of furniture:

Isn’t it grand?  I love it!  It was made and given to me by my Grandpa Bob.  He was a high school shop teacher and has always enjoyed wood-working as a leisure activity.

There is more to the story: this last Christmas, my dad’s side of the family did a home made gift exchange.  We had to make a home made gift for the person whose name we drew.  Well, Josh being the not-so-hands-on gift-giver got my grandpa’s name.  After much thought and agonizing, really, Josh decided to give Grandpa the gift of time spent together.  One Monday when Josh didn’t have to work, he drove Grandpa into the Woodsmith Store (the gift card to the store was the part of the gift Grandpa opened on Christmas day) they shopped and had lunch together.

With his Christmas gift, Grandpa bought the instructions to make this quilt rack for me.

That pretty much sums up the kind of guy my grandpa is.

This last Sunday when Grandma and Grandpa were here for my baptism, they brought it to me.  What a surprise!  They said it was supposed to be for my birthday that was in April.  I just think it’s spectacular and for all the quilts I’ve made, it’s about time I have a quilt rack!  Of course, Grandpa didn’t make a big deal out of it, but it IS a big deal.  Josh was the one who filled me in on the Woodsmith Store trip that resulted in this awesome gift.

The quilt shown was a quilt I made last fall for the Fons & Porter baby quilt contest.  I didn’t win anything, but I love the quilt.  Jett has pretty much claimed it for his own, and that’s ok with me, I like to see it being used in our own home.  I’ll have to post more on the quilt some other time.  It’s constructed in a way that might surprise a some quilters.

Thanks Grandpa!  You’re the best!
