Taking color out of value

One tricky thing about choosing fabrics and using them in a quilt is working with value.  Not color, mind you, but the saturation of color making value light, medium, dark, and every range in between.

The quilt in the following pictures is the one I made for my nephew Jackson, he was born in February [...]

Making a design wall

I love my design wall.  My dad built mine, and although I can’t tell you exactly step by step how he made it, I can tell you the materials we used and the basics of the construction.

I began by searching online for automotive headliner – thanks to watching an episode of Quilt [...]

Preparing fabric & making spray starch

I love using spray starch to prepare my fabric for patchwork because of the body and crispness it gives the fabric.

I first pre-wash all fabrics before using them in a quilt.  After I wash my fabric in cold water (speed cycle – little detergent), I dry it in the clothes dryer on regular heat [...]

First pattern

I am self-publishing my first pattern soon.  It’s been tested for accuracy, now I have to make the final changes and have it printed.  Here’s a first look.  The first booklet shows the professional color printing and the second booklet was printed on my home printer, trimmed down to size and coil bound.  The final [...]

Inspired

I wanted to share my recently inherited pillowcases with you.  Ok, the photos only show one, but the other pillowcase is identical.  I don’t know what I’ll do with these besides quilt the living snot out of them! :)  I can just see all the empty space being filled with an intricate quilted [...]

Ta-da!

Here it is.

This is the quilt I designed and made for a customer’s parents’ 50th anniversary.  I posted the draft of this quilt about a month ago, here.  I put a ton of hours in last week and got it done at 2:30 am the morning of the anniversary party, which was last [...]

Lovebirds (Circle Gets the Square)

I worked like a crazy person Friday and Saturday and I finished this quilt just in time give to our friends who got married over the weekend.  Literally, I finished the binding (by machine), soaked the quilt in cold water to remove the marking lines, ran it through the washer’s spin cycle to remove the [...]

Mod prog

Progress on Lovebirds (Circle gets the Square):

I finished piecing the entire top last night.  I had to stay up until 12:30 am to do it, but sometimes you just can’t quit when you’re on a roll!

I used a variety of fabrics that contained red, black and white.  Funny, I liked the boldness [...]

Not my idea :)

Here’s the story about the quilt that I finished but can’t take credit for:

It was May and I was finishing the Boy with a Coin quilt for a customer.  Let me take you back even more… whenever I design a quilt, the first thing I do after I have the design is calculate how [...]

I thought I’d share a current project with you.  I’m not sure about it.  I like it, but I don’t know if I love it.  I’m leaving what I have on the design wall now so I can look at it with fresh eyes later.

I’m using a fall palette… out of step with the [...]
