At the time I made this quilt, I posted instructions on how to make a snowball block and how to sew a quilt top together, but I also photographed the process I go through to make appliqué letters.

After finishing the letters on the aprons, I thought it would be a good time to post a li’l tutorial on appliqué.

So here we go!

The first thing I do is decide what letter or word(s) will go onto the project.

Next, I open up Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 (actually, I have version 7, but either would make a great Christmas gift) to sample fonts. Or you could use Microsoft Word or any other word-processing program for this. I type the letter or word out and sample a number of fonts to find the right look I’m after.

When I find the right font, I will adjust the size of the letter or letters until they are a good “actual size” for the project. Keep in mind when making adjustments or choosing a font, that you want the letters to be thick enough to stitch around. If a letter is too skinny, it’ll be very difficult to stitch around both edges. You want a meaty letter. Use the bold command if needed.

At this point, you should have the letter(s) how you want ‘em on the screen. The next VERY IMPORTANT thing to do is use the “flip” or “mirror image” tool within your editor to reverse the letters. In Elements, go to the ‘Image’ menu, then ‘Rotate’ and then ‘Flip Horizontal’.

Next, if you’re lucky enough not to have your printer destroyed by toddlers, go ahead and print out the letter(s). And since I don’t fall into that category, I’ll show you my green approach.

You will need fusible web product. I like this one:

It’s called Heat N Bond Lite and it’s available in any quilt shop or craft supply store. I usually buy a section off the roll at my local quilt shop, but as you can see from the image link, it’s also sold in prepackaged sizes. Heat N Bond Lite and other similar products are paper backed adhesives.

So, here’s what I do next.

I take the Heat N Bond Lite and paper-side-up, place it over my laptop screen. I bend my screen almost all the way back, I just think it’s easier to trace that way. Then I trace around each letter. I used a pen here, but you could use a pencil or a Sharpie. It doesn’t matter too much as long as the ink doesn’t transfer onto the iron’s surface, then you could have problems.

Then I cut the letters from the rest of the fusible web. I traced the letters in a cluster and placed them somewhat close together to save more fusible web for future projects. Just make sure none of the letters touch and leave space when you trim, too.

Now, if you have enough fabric, you may just fuse this cutout directly to the reverse side of your fabric. I used what little scraps of fabric I had left, so I could not. This is what I was working with:

See? Not quite big enough, so I had to cut the letters apart.

This picture shows that each letter will fit on the scraps of fabric. But…

when it comes time to fuse it to the fabric, make sure you iron it to the back side of the fabric, like shown here. Follow the package directions to know which iron setting to use and how much time is needed to adhere the fusible to the fabric, all brands are a little bit different.

Continue to fuse all letters to the fabric. After fusing, let them set for awhile so they cool off.

The next step is cutting out the shape on the line. I like using a pair of small and sharp embroidery scissors for this task. It makes my life easier.

Here are all the letters cut out and ready to be fused onto the quilt top. But first, you might want to play around with the placement of the letters on your quilt top or other project. Quilters love saying “audition” and you should to. Go ahead, audition different letter placements until you find the perfect layout.

When you have the appliqué arranged how you want, it’s time to peel off the paper backing and fuse the it onto the quilt top (or other project). Again, follow the fusible product’s instructions for proper iron setting and time requirements.

The final step is to stitch the appliqué shapes into place. Luckily for you, I wrote a tutorial on this awhile back! =) Start at step #4 of those directions.

Here’s a closer look at the appliqué stitches, I matched the thread to the fabric.

Now go forth and appliqué! It’s a great way to personalize a gift!

After helping make an apron over the weekend, I had the idea to make another apron for a little girl who celebrated her birthday today. This girl, well she’s not just any girl, she’s Jett’s girl. Some how, some way, months ago Jude and Jett got the idea that they both had girls. Jett says his girl is Gabriela and Jude says his girl is Alexis (both are preschool classmates). Anyway, Gabriela loves doing crafts so I thought she might like an apron to wear to protect her clothes while crafting or helping her mommy in the kitchen.

It only took me a couple of hours (even with frequent interruptions… obviously) to put it together, and that included drawing up the pattern on a newspaper after getting some measurements from my boys.

Here it is:

I don’t mean to sound boastful, but: how cute is that?!

It almost makes me want to have a little girl of my own. Almost. Not enough to stop my husband from having a certain *ahem* procedure Friday.

A little pocket with her initial is the perfect finishing touch!

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I couldn’t have done it without Jude and Jett’s help!

They were perfect little models. Here’s Jett:

My customer wanted a custom quilt to give to her brother and new sister-in-law as a wedding gift. The family just loves their dogs and my customer wanted to include pictures of the dogs belonging to her, her brother and her sister-in-law. She liked the look and style of my Lovebirds (Circle gets the Square) quilt so this is a take on that concept.

The polka dot and floral print are Amy Butler fabrics from the Lotus line. There will be a large black border sewn around what you see here. I plan to free-motion quilt the top using an all-over meander.

I have to tell you, friends, about my super-awesome new quilt designer friend. Her name is Kelly and she is the owner of The Wooden Bear – a pattern design company she started in 2002. I met Kelly at the Ladies of the Lake retreat at the end of October; she gave a presentation on her patterns that day and offered them for sale.

Since I have been interested in going in a pattern-writing direction with my business, I asked her some questions at the retreat. During our conversation, we discovered we lived fairly close to each other and have been keeping in touch since.

Kelly has really cute patterns featuring appliqué characters that have a sense of humor – you should check out her web site linked above. She was also recently asked to design a fabric line for Red Rooster fabrics and that line is scheduled to release in the Spring of 2009. And a book of patterns in the works that feature new designs using the new fabrics. Exciting stuff!

In the short time I’ve known her, she’s been so helpful and encouraging – I look forward to a continued relationship with Kelly and to keep you – my readers – posted on all the exciting developments to come in her world.

Look at this beautiful, glowing pregnant woman! Doesn’t she look great? Would you believe she’ll be 30 weeks along with twins next week? She looks so small!

And check out this score:

And this is what she got from me:

Her baby girl names, you ask?

Neve Audrey

Frankie Grace

Cute, cute, cute! I love the names and it sounds like they are already living up to their names in utero. Frankie is the wild one who bounces around 24/7 and Neve is the one crouched in the duck-and-cover position most of the time!

When I asked Ali for quilt ideas, she said colors she liked for the girls were pink, green and yellow. When I was looking for fabric online, I saw all these wonderful, large scale prints and I couldn’t help myself – I bought almost every one I found on www.equilter.com – one of my favorite online shops.

Since the quilts are so similar using the same fabrics in both, I wanted to make each girl’s quilt unique by adding first initials. I used French Script MT font from Microsoft Word, adjusted the size to 300 and made it bold so I’d have more fabric to applique around. After fusing the letters to background fabric, I used a tiny zig zag stitch to finish the edges.

December 12th (scheduled C-section delivery – baby A is feet-first), will be here in no time! Can’t wait!

I had the pleasure of meeting baby Owen for the first time last night. He’s so adorable! Owen and his family are doing very well.

Here’s the proud mommy and her precious babe:

Look at that hair!

I’ve started asking expectant moms for input as I design a baby quilt for their child. A direction for themes or colors helps me greatly. Jackie wanted deeper colors of blue and red along with khaki centered around the nautical theme in his nursery.

I started looking for fabric online and found a perfect fabric line called The Hamptons by Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson for Moda fabrics. In this case, the fabrics really got my creative juices flowing!

Here’s what I ended up with:

As for the quilting, I’m on a stippling/meandering tear and have finished the last several quilts with the same overall pattern. It’s the fastest and easiest, and I do like the results. Non-quilters seem impressed with it, as well. The next time I give myself more time to finish a quilt, I’m going to challenge myself not to do the easiest thing. I’m not beating myself up about it… I’ve done 5 quilts in 8 days!

Have a happy weekend, everyone! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s baby shower for my friend Ali who is expecting twins (girls!) in December. More on that next week…

My mom took the boys for a couple of nights this past weekend. Josh and I got a lot done around the house, had friends over, finished my quilt, had a Dairy Queen date… good times!

Here is the finished quilt:

The design is not mine. The design and pattern is from Susan Marth.

As I mentioned in the previous post about this quilt, it is a quilt-as-you-go pattern. The strips are all sewn to the batting and backing first, meaning the applique was added after the quilting was done. Not the normal order.

For those of you non-applique-ers, the edges of applique should be turned under or finished with a stitch, not only to secure the position of the applique shapes to the quilt, but also to prevent the fabric from fraying.

Since the applique pieces were fused onto this quilt, I was skeptical about finishing the edges because at the same time I would be quilting through all of the layers. I decided to quilt tiny loops along every raw edge to make sure the applique letters and shapes weren’t going anywhere. It ended up looking like a decorative stitch, which made me happy.

Here are a few close-up looks:

While we’re on the subject of applique, I want to share a good tip I received in an applique class once: [when finishing raw edge applique] if you can’t find a thread color to match your fabric exactly, always choose a darker color thread versus a lighter thread.

That golden nugget of advice has served me well! I’ve often been surprised by how good some threads look that I wouldn’t have initially selected.

****

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

And while we’re on the subject now of love, I’d like to wish a happy anniversary to my parents today. Twenty-nine years! Congratulations! You’re the best!

I have started the next quilt project on my customer list. I’m still not done with the Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt; I am done with the quilting, though, a that’s a relief, it took a loooong time. I’m in the process of hand binding it now, and that could take a while, too – I’ve been working on it in the evenings after the kids go to sleep. It’s something I can do on the couch while watching tv.

Anyway, back to the next quilt I need to have finished by the end of the month. My customer spotted this quilt on the Adel Quilting and Dry Goods blog and he called the shop about it. He thought it would be perfect for his wife. The shop referred him to me. I found out who the pattern designer was and contacted her for permission to recreate the quilt for my customer. She was very gracious and granted permission.

The pattern is called Faith, Hope & Love and the designer and pattern author is Susan Marth of Suzn Quilts. Here’s a picture of the quilt from the Suzn Quilts website:

Not until I ordered the pattern did I realize it uses the quilt-as-you-go method, which is the first time I’ve done it. Basically, with quilt-as-you-go, you lay the backing fabric out and baste the batting to it (I used basting spray adhesive) as the first step. In this case, the strips of fabric are sewn to each other as they’re sewn to the batting and backing.

Here’s a picture of the quilt in progress:

It’s a fun method!

A photo of the finished quilt will be posted next week…

I worked like a crazy person Friday and Saturday and I finished this quilt just in time give to our friends who got married over the weekend. Literally, I finished the binding (by machine), soaked the quilt in cold water to remove the marking lines, ran it through the washer’s spin cycle to remove the excess water, dried it in the clothes dryer on delicate (didn’t have time to air dry), snapped a few pictures of it, handed it off to Josh to wrap up while I got ready for the wedding, all within an hour and a half. There is nothing like a deadline to motivate this girl!

The pictures aren’t great – I was rushed. The quilt finished at approximately 58″ x 74″… too small for a bed but a good size for watching tv under, or as I suggested in the accompanying card – making babies under. :)

close-ups of quilting:

cross-hatching in the center square

quilted a spiral within each circle & quilted the white space surrounding the circles using a serpentine meander

I drew these feathered paisley shapes free-hand onto the fabric with a white marking pen before quilting them.
