I thought I’d share a current project with you. I’m not sure about it. I like it, but I don’t know if I love it. I’m leaving what I have on the design wall now so I can look at it with fresh eyes later.
I’m using a fall palette… out of step with the weather we’re having I know, but I love the colors all the same. I don’t know what the block is called, EQ5 calls it Mosaic, No. 21 – which isn’t very romantic. I’m sure there’s an alternate name out there somewhere. Anyway, I’m alternating the values in the blocks (one block has a light center diamond shape and the next one has a dark center). Take a look and tell me what you think:
And a close-up of some of the fabrics. I absolutely love the cream background fabric; it has a subtle paisley-like print with swirls:

I love the colors but to me it gives a feeling of “sharp & pointy” as displayed. I like the fabric as shown in the close up pix too.
I must be old fashioned because I really like it! I think you’ll get good comments. Something on the order of flippin’ fall, since the colors flip back and forth – but that doesn’t sound very romantic either.
By the way, I don’t think I’ve told you lately how much I love your website – especially your blogs. I read them all the time, and love keeping up with what’s going on in your life and seeing pics of your boys and Josh.
Give everyone a hug for me and take care!

you’re right, mom… very graphic & high contrast to make the lines harsh looking. but i like the secondary designs that result from alternating the value placement. i’m thinking just sewing it together and quilting it will soften it up a bit. i’m still undecided…
This is a pattern that creates optical tricks, I looked and each time I saw something different. I remember when Grandma Estelle gave up on an ocean wave pattern for that very reason.
I like the pattern which reminds of of the ocean wave pattern. I also like the colors, have you considered naming it after a tornado?
You may not remember it, but we have a very old woven wool and flax throw that was always introduced as “this went through the Grinnell cyclone”. Of course this did not refer to the pattern.
Girl! What are you talking about!? I love this one!
i love it jessie!! i’ve found for myself, if i take pictures of different layouts with color values in different ways (and using black and white), it gives me a better perspective. something about a photo that helps you figure out what looks good and doesn’t. just an idea, but i do love what you have! i also love the earth tone colors. there are a million different ways this quilt could be laid out!!! can’t wait to see what you decide
Jessie, I like this. I too, really like the background print. Is that something you found recently? Flippin’ fall, very appropriate!
