I just finished another baby quilt for a neighbor family who welcomed a new baby girl several weeks ago.
I had bought a lot of cute “girl” fabric lately and I wanted to incorporate it into this quilt. I also didn’t want to cut the fabric up too much, so I just started slicing and dicing – not working from a pattern. I seamed two fabrics together until I had a piece that was about 10″ wide. When I arranged those irregular blocks, I tried to place a long horizontal seamed block next to a vertically seamed block. I trimmed each block to 9 1/2″ wide, sewed them into vertical rows and joined the 4 rows together to complete the top.
The appliquéd “a” is for Anna.
The quilt title is from Olivia Tremor Control’s song The Sky is a Harpsichord Canvas. It’s a 4 second song on one of their albums, but Josh thought it was fitting for this quilt, and I have to agree.
If you’re keeping track at home, this is the 2nd quilt named after an Olivia Tremor Control song, the other one being Spring Succeeds. One might think we’re huge OTC fans… no, not really. It’s more “like” than “love” at this point, but they have very creative song titles.
